What Is a Mileage Cap on an Exotic Car Rental?
A mileage cap is the number of miles included in your exotic car rental rate, usually stated per day. Drive beyond it and each additional mile is billed at a stated per-mile overage rate. Unlike mainstream rentals, unlimited mileage is rare on exotics because depreciation and service costs scale directly with distance driven.
The economics are straightforward. Supercar consumables — tires, brakes, clutches, fluids, scheduled service — are priced in thousands, and mileage drives resale value on a car the company is usually still financing. A capped allowance with a per-mile overage is how that cost is passed to the person who actually incurs it, rather than averaged across every renter regardless of how far they drove.
Read three numbers, not one. First, the included allowance and whether it is per day or pooled across the whole rental — a pooled allowance on a three-day booking is materially more flexible than a strict daily cap. Second, the overage rate per mile. Third, whether overage is charged automatically against the security deposit hold or invoiced separately afterward. Overage rates on high-end inventory are steep enough that one long drive can approach the cost of an additional rental day.
Plan the actual route before you book. Miami-area driving is deceptive: South Beach to Wynwood and back barely registers, but a Keys run to Key West and back is roughly 320 miles round trip, and Miami to Palm Beach and back is around 140. Add those honestly to your itinerary and compare against the allowance. If you are over, ask about buying additional miles up front, since pre-purchased miles are typically cheaper than the penalty rate.
Check the geographic restrictions in the same clause. Many exotic agreements limit operation to specific counties or prohibit leaving the state without written approval, and taking the car outside the permitted area can void coverage rather than merely trigger a fee. Track use, competitive events, and commercial or filming use are typically prohibited outright. Confirm every one of these in the written agreement rather than by phone, and keep a copy.
