What Is a Tender?

The tender exists because a large yacht's draft is a liability at the last hundred yards. When the mother vessel is anchored off a sandbar, a marina, or a beach it cannot approach, the tender covers the gap. That is the whole job: it carries people, provisions, and gear where the yacht physically cannot go, then returns.

The category spans a wide range. At one end sits a dinghy, typically a 7 to 12 foot inflatable or hard boat, light enough to row, sail, or push with a small outboard. In the middle sit rigid inflatable boats, or RIBs, which combine a solid hull with inflatable tubes for buoyancy and fender protection. At the top end, superyacht tenders are purpose-built limousine or open runabouts costing more than many complete yachts, capable of high-speed transfers in comfort.

On charter, the tender is often also the toy. A capable RIB tows a wakeboard, runs a tube, drops divers, and takes guests exploring mangrove edges the main vessel cannot enter. Where a charter advertises watersports, the tender's engine size and towing capability are usually the real determinant of what you can do, not the size of the mother yacht.

Two things to confirm before you book. First, whether a tender is actually carried; many Miami day-charter boats are not equipped with one, which matters if your itinerary includes a shallow sandbar and a deep-draft hull. Second, who operates it. On a crewed charter the tender is normally run by a credentialed crew member, and passenger counts and safety equipment rules apply to it as they do to any vessel carrying people. Tenders are also where charter accidents cluster, because they are small, fast, frequently overloaded, and often run at night. Life jackets, a kill-cord, and a sober operator are not optional on the tender simply because the main vessel is anchored a hundred yards away.
